American made in Florida
Goodwin Heart Pine Company, specialists in recovering original growth logs from Southern rivers, was the first reclaimed wood company to offer an American made precision engineered wood floor. This helps Goodwin conserve the rare wood while allowing homeowners and building design professionals to install premium flooring in environments where solid wood flooring is impractical or not advisable.

Tight-grained, nearly indestructible, stable, and rich, Goodwin Antique Heart Pine PE floors provide all the beauty and luxurious warmth for which their premium solid wood products are known, respected and cherished while helping conserve the rare all heart wood.

George Goodwin was planning for engineered wood floor production many years ago when he designed his sawmill so that the last cut off each rare River Recovered® log was a thicker board. These were set aside to go into a specialty frame saw that George had custom built to cut the dense, resinous wood into faces or wear layers for engineered flooring.

The Design and Testing Process
Goodwin had the equipment but until George found Andrew St. James, master flooring craftsman and as much of a perfectionist as George himself, the design process lingered. Andrew’s wood floor technical connections are among the best in the world and wood science is his passion. However, he found that he personally had to perform most of the product tests as there isn’t the large body of research on engineered wood that exists on solid wood floors.

Finally George and Andrew were satisfied that the design yielded a floor that was longer than most engineered to look like a solid wood floor, could be sanded and refinished like solid wood and would avoid problems of some other engineered wood floors. Miguel Scannone, Goodwin’s Production Manager, focuses on quality of the wood and grading second only to equipment maintenance. He was the natural choice to train and oversee a manufacturing team for the new product line.

Why Goodwin ‘Precision Engineered’ Might be Right for You
Goodwin installed engineered wood floors in commercial and residential projects that had performed well for over two years. Still, the pre-finish was a concern. After tests with ten different pre-finish companies, Goodwin found a match to the company’s high level of craftsmanship and love of beautiful wood with Greyne Custom Wood Company of Charlotte, NC. Greyne uses a vegetable-based oil, followed by an amberizing sealer with a high quality water-based topcoat that looks warm and natural. The finish has a furniture quality surface and offers a twenty-year warranty on residential with limited commercial.

In addition to the River Recovered® antique heart pine, Goodwin offers its ‘precision engineered’ wood floor in building reclaimed antique heart pine, wild black cherry, antique heart cypress, walnut and mahogany (Andiroba) among other reclaimed or rescued woods. They are ready to meet your needs for superior engineered wood floors featuring:

A thicker wear layer than most (3/16", equivalent to that of solid wood flooring) More real antique or reclaimed wood beyond the backer for a consistently tighter fit More backer above the tongue and groove to ensure the floor’s flatness Extreme milling tolerances and profile design to simplify installation and fit Longer lengths (mostly 8') than other precision engineered wood Available both pre-finished and unfinished with a warranty on the floor and the finish Earth friendly reclaimed face, certified ‘green’ backer and low formaldehyde glues Made in the USA, entirely assembled at their plant in Florida.

Your Finish is Green
Your floor's ‘green’ finish from Goodwin has a level of quality far above what is currently available on other reclaimed or antique wood. Three components are employed to achieve the quality: true oil finish, coloration and a superior water based topcoat. The result is a finish that is both beautiful on antique or reclaimed wood and that wears well over time.

Oil Finish: Many wood finishes contain volatile organic compounds (VOC), some of which are known carcinogens. The first layer of Goodwin's Precision Engineered floor finish is a high quality, no VOC, oil by WOCA (Wood Oil Company of America).

WOCA is derived from cold pressed vegetable oils and aromatic hardening oils with no VOC. This results in a highly wear resistant surface that is environmentally friendly. The oil penetrates deeply into the surface and actually hardens the wood as it bonds to the wood grain giving a wear resistant, easy to maintain surface. It can be applied as a two-coat system for a very matte, natural look if that is desired or with an additional coat for more sheen.

While oiled floors do not have the Taber (a test for abrasion resistance) of some ‘film’ finished floors, they are far more easily repaired and maintained. When cared for in accordance with the WOCA recommendations re-coating will never be necessary. This system is commonly used in heavy traffic commercial applications such as malls.

Coloration: Reclaimed wood looks good with some ‘warmth’ achieved using a ‘green’ system. Traditional stains are avoided due to the volatile organic compound (VOC) content, lack of clarity caused by the pigment, or a tendency to color shift over time. While we can offer custom chemical alteration or custom dyes, our standard first coat is an amberizing sealer formulated to avoid batch-to-batch variation in traditional dyes and with far better long-term performance.

Film Finish for Your Top Coat: Typical roll coated, ultraviolet lamp cured film finishes often show texture and clarity issues. Our prefinish wear layer employs a spray applied waterborne polyurethane system to provide high performance wear with greater clarity and furniture quality surface texture. It is a very low VOC waterborne polyurethane manufactured by Finitec Canada that is LEED compliant. Finitec specializes in environmentally friendly, high performance waterborne finishes.

The Finish Line!
Goodwin's pre-finished wood floor has a furniture finish quality surface, a 20-year residential warranty, with ‘limited’ commercial, and the warmth of an oil finish. It truly is the best of all.
